Student Health
Risks of Poor Diet
Students away at college
find themselves at risk of developing negative eating
habits which can also be destructive and sometimes even
life threatening. The problems with food courts and
commons in colleges and universities lies with their all
you can eat and drink buffet styled policy. Late night
snacks, useful for getting through cram and study
sessions, may feel necessary, but they often lead to bad
health, weight gains, and eventually real health risks.
The true danger comes from a continued intake of
calories, combined with typically little or even no
physical exercise. The body is not able to stay healthy
in this way. Bing Eating Disorder commonly results.
BED, or Binge Eating Disorder, is demonstrated by
excessive and uncontrolled eating habits. These are
sometimes followed with sensations of guilt and shame.
Although this at first sounds much like bulimia, the
food eating disorder in which persons expel the food
afterward through vomiting, it is not. Such college
students do not typically expunge the food once they
consume it, leading to the junk foods remaining in their
bodies. With time and continued practice, this may cause
high cholesterol, obesity, and even an increased danger
of getting a heart attack or heart disease while still
young.

Binge eating commonly causes college students to put on
weight and evolve to obese levels. Sometimes the
students will eat even when they are not hungry. This is
where the concept of the Freshman 15 pounds comes in to
play. Through talking to a counselor at the college or
university, the individual can receive help and resource
materials concerning the risks of becoming seriously
obese and at risk of heart disease.
Bing eating is commonly associated with depression and
loneliness. Those who are victims of it can suffer from
more than just weight gain, high cholesterol, diabetes,
and high blood pressure. They are also at risk of
developing gallbladder disease, as well as numerous
kinds of cancer. Binge eating commonly increases
cholesterol levels, which then build up in the arteries
and can damage them. This can cause early death from
heart disease, with little warning.
Not only college students, but the majority of
Americans, potentially suffer from poor diets and the
effects associated with Binge Eating Disorder. Highly
processed foods, along with diets rich in highly
saturated fats, plague the entire American population.
Through diminishing the amount of cholesterol taken into
the body, college students, and all Americans in
general, are capable of greatly reducing the chances of
developing heart disease. In such a way, they are able
to boost their health, and also their potential
lifespan.
